Our recent week-long journey to Destin-Fort Walton Beach, Florida, was more than just a getaway; it was an incredible family adventure that completely redefined our travel style.

If you follow along on Instagram, you know my mission is always to find those unique, doable family trips that turn a standard vacation into a genuine expedition. This trip, orchestrated in partnership with @destinfwb, was designed to put their Little Adventures Program to the ultimate test. And spoiler alert: it passed with flying colors. Destin-Fort Walton Beach truly delivers on its promise to be an ideal destination for families seeking water-based, adventurous activities for children of all ages. This place is not just about the beach—it’s about getting your family in the water and turning every day into a memorable escapade.

Our Home Base: RealJoy Vacations

Every great adventure needs a comfortable home base, and ours was perfection. We stayed in a gorgeous condo managed by RealJoy Vacations, specifically Emerald Towers 503. The view from our balcony was simply breathtaking—that famous emerald water meeting the sugar-white sand. It was spacious enough for all of us, decorated beautifully, and the complex amenities meant we could transition seamlessly from full-day adventures to relaxed evenings. Having a dedicated kitchen and comfortable living space is essential for traveling with little ones, and RealJoy made it feel like our own coastal sanctuary. If you’re planning your trip, you absolutely have to check out their options; you can find the property we stayed at and more right here: https://linkprotect.cudasvc.com/url?a=https%3a%2f%2fbit.ly%2f4hzcWJH&c=E,1,HN3xKOz2UKKXY6mpGAkghOiBPH_KRABoxAdn-CnfuW3JtITwB39GrnTV63AOaRRIfBUm7UGtohLVJgqzxMWvoEAMkvrUhNH_8nvSlwZhW0J1CKHM8hY,&typo=1

From Sandcastles to Sea Dogs: Pirate Life and Dolphin Encounters

Our first full day was all about dipping our toes into the Gulf’s vibrant heart. After a lazy morning building sand dunes, we headed to HarborWalk Village for the Buccaneer Cruise! I mean, who doesn't want to live the pirate life for an afternoon? The kids were immediately captivated by the crew, who kept everyone laughing and engaged with water-gun battles and treasure hunts. Watching the sun begin to dip below the horizon while sailing the Gulf—and spotting a few playful dolphins—was the perfect way to kick off our stay. It was thrilling, completely safe, and the kind of water-based activity that elevates the whole trip.

That evening, we celebrated our successful venture at Harbor Tavern. It’s located right on the Harbor, giving us a front-row seat to the sunset and the bustling marina activity. The atmosphere was welcoming and the food was exactly the kind of satisfying, coastal fare we craved after a busy day on the water.

Beyond the Water: Alligators, Aquarium Fun, and Arcade Thrills

One of the key selling points for me about Destin-Fort Walton Beach is that it offers incredible experiences beyond just going to the beach. Tuesday proved this in spades.

We started our day at the Gulfarium. This place is a must for families! We spent hours watching the dolphin and sea lion shows, and the kids loved the interactive exhibits. It was an educational and engaging morning that gave us a chance to get up close with marine life without getting wet—a nice break from the constant sun and spray! The Gulfarium team was so welcoming and clearly passionate about their conservation work, which always adds a layer of depth to the experience.

In the afternoon, we transitioned to pure, adrenaline-fueled fun at Wild Willy’s Adventure Zone. While some of the seasonal rides were closed, we made full use of the arcade and mini-golf. My littlest one was obsessed with the dinosaur-themed course, and the arcade games were a huge hit for all ages (including my husband!). It was a great reminder that the destination t knows how to deliver dry-land thrills too. We wrapped up Tuesday with delicious, fresh, Gulf-front Mexican food at Rockin’ Tacos—the views of the water from the restaurant were spectacular!

The Hook, the Line, and the Kitchen: A True Little Adventure

If I had to pick one highlight that perfectly embodies the Little Adventures Program, it would be our Wednesday experience: Hook and Cook.

We met our expert captain from Destin Inshore Guides bright and early at the Harbor. Now, fishing with kids can be intimidating, but our captain was patient, knowledgeable, and genuinely fantastic with the children. We headed out and, thanks to his guidance, we had a successful morning on the water! This is exactly what the Little Adventures are all about—taking a traditional Destin experience (deep-sea fishing) and tailoring it to make it fun, accessible, and rewarding for families.

But the adventure didn't end there! We took our fresh catch right across the street to The Edge Seafood Grill & Skybar for the ultimate Cook Your Catch experience. Talk about fresh! The chefs prepared our fish perfectly—it was the most satisfying lunch of the entire trip, knowing we had caught the fish mere hours before.

The atmosphere around the Harbor that afternoon, with the Fishing Rodeo weigh-ins happening right in front of AJ's, was electric. You could feel the deep, authentic fishing heritage of Destin everywhere. We finished the day with an equally welcoming and delicious dinner at AJ’s Seafood and Oyster Bar, enjoying more harbor views and reflecting on our amazing day.

A Gator Surprise and the Secret Weapon

Our final full day brought us face-to-face with some non-marine creatures—alligators! A visit to Gator Beach and Fudpuckerswas a fun and unique way to close out our trip. Getting to hold a baby alligator was certainly a core memory made! The entire staff, from the folks at Gator Beach to the team at Fudpuckers, were friendly and encouraging, reflecting that overall welcoming spirit we felt from all the partners we encountered.

And speaking of a welcoming spirit, I want to share the secret weapon that makes planning a Destin-Fort Walton Beach trip so seamless: the Chat Feature. The Little Adventures Programwas developed in collaboration with local moms, and they have a team of online scouts (who are also local moms!) trained to assist families. You can literally chat one-on-one with them on the destination website, review mom- and kid-approved adventures like the hook and cook trips or pontoon rentals, andset an itinerary that perfectly fits your family's ages and interests. It takes all the guesswork out of planning and ensures your trip is customized for maximum fun!

The Verdict

Our week proved that Destin-Fort Walton Beach is far more than just a beautiful beach spot. It is a true family adventure destination, centered around the water and powered by incredibly welcoming local partners. The Little Adventures Program is the key that unlocks it all, transforming the planning process from stressful to simply exciting.

Happy (and adventurous!) traveling,

The Little Welch Travelers
